The New Zealand Association was formed 1837 to colonize New Zealand under the influence of E. G. Wakefield. Disolved 1838 after the failure in Parliament of a Bill concerning the scheme. Lt. Col. Robert Henry Wynyard administered the Government of New Zealand between the Departure of Sir George Grey 1853 and the arrival of Col. Gore-Browne 1855. Philip Lamothe Snell Chauncy, sketcher, amateur photographer and surveyor, was born 21 June 1816 in England at Datchet, Bucks. He arrived in South Australia in 1839, went to Swan River, and was appointed assistant Surveyor at Perth in 1841. In 1853, he went to Victoria, and was appointed District Surveyor of Heathcote.
